The Mysterious Caravan – By Franklin W. Dixon – This book was great. The boys found a mask buried in the sand while on vacation. After cleaning the mask they discovered that it was probably a death mask from long ago. It had a secret map on the back of it. The boys brought home the mask and a bunch of bad guys with them. The boys had to travel the world and make new friends in different countries. The boys solved their case and helped their father solve his all in one.

Extra Credit – By Andrew Clements – To look at the cover this book appears that it is going to be different than Clements’ other books. This fifth grader is getting ready to go to middle school and is failing. Her teacher gives her some extra credit work to do that will help her pass. Abby is to write several letters to a penpal. The penpal is from Afghanistan. The teacher in Afghanistan wants his best student to write the letter, but that happens to be a boy. The elders do no think it appropriate for a boy to be writing to a girl, so they ask his younger sister to write the letter under her brother’s supervision. The two start to exchange letters when both sides have opposition. In Afghanistan a rough man man handles the boy because of the letter. In America a parent feels uncomfortable with the Afghanistan flag in the room. So the letters must stop for the safety of all. The two children learned a lot about other country. It was a good book.

The boys are searching for anyone who knows something about a mysterious submarine or a certain mark that is placed on some doorways. The boys and their father save several lives and connect all the dots to solve the mystery.

Chasing Vermeer – 64

Chasing Vermeer – By Blue Balliett – This book was great. I found out that it has hidden things in the pictures that you have to look very carefully for. There are pentominoes and frogs in the pictures you have to find. Anyway this book is about two kids that live in the same neighborhood that become friends. They are both different. A thief has stolen one of Vermeer’s painting, A Lady Writing. Petra and Calder discover clues about the life of Vermeer, a famous painter. They think they can find out who the thief is and where he has hidden the picture. It is a great book. I look forward to reading the next book Calder’s Game.
